• Why a Blacklight Will Take Your Night Fishing To A New Level

If You Have Never Used A Blacklight While Night Fishing, You're Missing Out We all know the benefits of night fishing - bigger catches and calmer waters are just two, however, night fishermen have several challenges that "day time" fishermen do not have to deal with. One of the most difficult challenges is, of course, being able to see your line to find out if you have had a hit. Here is one way of easily being able to watch your line at night. Use a blacklight and a fluorescent fishing line. When fishing at night, it may be a few seconds before you know you have one on the line....

    Tastes Like Chicken!

For the most part, I am an advocate for catch and release fishing. Sustaining the fish and habitat in the sport you love only makes sense. However, sometimes a freshly caught trout, bass, or crappie is just to tempting to pass up. So even though I release most fish that I hook these days, I will occasionally thump one on the head and do my best Emiral Lagassi imatation, as I grill, cajunize, and accessorize my fish du jour. I have heard many people say that they like to fish--but they don't like to eat fish--and I just don't understand this....

The Old Man And His Bluegills

I started fishing a little lake just south of Somerset, Ohio, called Clouse Lake about 35 years ago. Matter of fact, when I first started fishing it, I fished with a fly rod. One day, I was fishing and noticed this older gentleman trying to get a little plastic boat on his car after a hard day's fishing. He was using a fly rod too. We began chatting and discovered we lived about 10 miles from one another. He lived in Pleasantville. As the conversation closed, he said he would call me sometime and we would go fishing together....

    Spinnerbait Tactics That Work

How many fish have you missed? It is said you could be missing over half the fish that are coming after your spinner bait. Why? Because you're getting short strikes. There is one way to fix that situation and it's easy to do.....add a trailer hook! Maybe one trailer hook isn't enough, you can add two or even three. Yes three, Hank Parker says he uses up to three trailer hooks, if it's good enough for Hank then it's good enough for me. A lot of people think you put a trailer hook up on the spinner bait hook, that isn't the case....

    Challenges of Nymph Fly Fishing

When nymph fly fishing, the angler is imitating the juvenilestage of aquatic insects. As such, all fly fishing is doneunderwater, not on top of it. Thus, unlike when dry fly fishing, an angler will not see a rise or the fish itself pop through thesurface when gulping in a fly. Additionally, unlike dry fly fishing, when using nymphs an anglerwill usually not be able to see the actual fly itself. Not beingable to see the fly itself is probably what gives anglers new tofly fishing with nymphs the most problems, as it needless to saymakes it more difficult to detect strikes and set the hook....

Cabo Sport Fishing is Like a Box of Chocolates

As Forrest Gump would say, you never know what you're going to get. Not too many things get me more excited than the prospect of hooking and landing big fish. The mere thought of setting the hook on a 300 pound marlin, hearing the scream of the drag as the fish pulls off line and watching the acrobatic leaps that follow really gets my heart pumping. Fortunately for me, a two and a half hour flight and a 30-minute drive is all it takes to find myself in the "billfish capital of the world"...

    Where The Bassalo Roam

Have you ever thought why fishing timbers is so productive? Well, for one, most anglers don't want to fish them because they're afraid of losing a $5.00 lure. This makes it better for us that are willing to take the risk. Sure, you get those who will throw a spinnerbait on the top of the timber but the fish are in the timber. You need to throw crankbaits or pitch a tube or jig to catch the fish. Most of the fish never see a spinnerbait. Also everyone knows that the bass will use that cover to break free if they can, again losing a lure in some cases....

Chumming and Plankton Fish Catching Tips

In night fishing 95% of success is determined before your line is wet. It is recommended to start an evening feeding frenzy along the food chain with your big game fish as the final predator. Proper chumming The darker the skies get, the more fish rely on their senses of smell and movement. The fish must sense either wounded prey moving, or the smell of food. A good method for this is to set out a good chum line. Drop your strip bait into the chum, or fish live bait just out side the slick, or at the bottom....

Colorado Fly Fishing - Bait Huckin vs. Fly Fishin

It was one of those fishing trips. You know, everyone catches fish but you, you loose six or eight of your most expensive streamers, it rains buckets, and you sink the boat. That's right; I got skunked at Steamboat Lake over Memorial weekend. I was determined to show those meat huckers (worms and power bait) that a well chosen and strategically placed fly was as effective as anything a conventional fisherman could load on a hook and hang under a bobber. Well, no such luck, I got stomped. The fish were rising like mad on a midge hatch, and I threw everything in the box at them....

Lakes in certain parts of the country contain more than something you want in your livewell. Alligators. They can be no more obvious than a rock or a log, so be careful. You want to get a bite, not get bit. Let me share one of my bass fishing experiences with you. This is bayou country. When I go to the lakes south of Houston, I have to watch for gators. What Has Happened to the Cod Stocks Off the Shores of Newfoundland?

The Newfoundland cod stocks. What has happened to cod fishing off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland? Several centuries ago, John Cabot, sailing under the English flag, found the richest fishing area the world would come to know. Cod stocks in the Grand Banks region off the coast of Newfoundland were so bountiful and endless that the wheels starting to turn.
